Cycling in Ottawa: Best Bike Routes and Cultural Hotspots

Biking is a popular pastime enjoyed by Ottawa residents, young and old. While warmer weather certainly draws more cyclists, it’s possible to pedal any time of year. That’s because Canada’s Capital is bike-friendly, with many lanes on roadways dedicated to cyclists and plenty of scenic trails for them to get back to nature.

In this blog, we’ll focus on some of Ottawa’s top bike routes, cultural stops and practical tips so that you can feel confident cycling in the city.

Don’t have a bike? Don’t worry! Adult, youth, and child bikes and helmets are available to borrow from the Accora Centre beginning May 16 through to October. Complimentary for 3 hours or $20 per day. Best Bike Routes in Ottawa

Bike routes can vary in terrain, from paved roadways to cleared dirt pathways. Whether you’re closer to the downtown core or located in one of Ottawa’s suburban areas will determine what kind of cycling path you have access to. That said, it’s easy to get from Point A to Point B no matter your address.

The Ottawa River Pathway

The Ottawa River Pathway is one of the longest bike trails in Ottawa. With roughly 30 km of paved trails, this bike trail begins in Kanata, close to various Accora Village residences, and follows the Ottawa River for a stunning scenic view.

Particular highlights include views of Britannia Beach, Andrew Haydon Park, Parliament Hill, and Gatineau. Cyclists can bike along the Champlain Bridge across the water or continue west across the city, taking in all Ottawa has to offer.

Rideau Canal UNESCO World Heritage Route

The Rideau Canal route passes through Ottawa and ends in Kingston. However, not everyone wants to go that far! Not to worry, as the Ottawa trail loops around the city, covering approximately 12.2 km for a moderately challenging route

This scenic path includes connections to waterfront trails and runs through Dow’s Lake, Hartwells Locks by Carleton University, and downtown. We recommend a brief stop at ByWard Market to grab a bite to eat.

Gatineau Park Loops

The Gatineau Park Loop trail is a more challenging route, typically recommended for adventurous cyclists. This trail guides you through forested trails and scenic lookouts, such as the Champlain Parkway or Fortune Lake Parkway. The largest protected natural green space spans around 50 km across Gatineau and the surrounding areas

If you want to take in the beauty of this area without all the pedalling, know that the path can be accessed by biking, driving, or public transportation to enjoy the forested trail at your own pace.

Must-See Cultural Hotspots Along the Way

Ottawa’s unique bike trails and top cultural spots offer a dynamic experience for cyclists of all levels. Ride through history, art, and nature’s embrace—it’s all here, waiting to be discovered.

Hog’s Back Falls

A series of waterfalls near Mooney’s Bay, Hog’s Back Falls is a beautiful and quiet spot to enjoy the water away from the city’s hustle and bustle. Plus, if biking along the Rideau Canal near Hog’s Back, you may be lucky enough to come across some groundhogs, which can be found nearby.

In the summer of 2024, The Hog’s Back Grill and Bistro opened, offering plenty of picnic tables and quality eats.

National Gallery of Canada

Off the Rideau Canal is the stunning National Gallery of Canada. Iconic for the giant Maman spider sculpture located right outside, the gallery hosts various events, exhibits, and tours. If you see something you’d like to attend, don’t wait! The National Gallery is always updating its offerings.

Watson’s Mill & Dickinson House

This historic site, which opens around mid-May, is located in Manotick, off the Rideau Canal bike trail. Dickinson Square is home to Watson’s Mill, a water-powered flour mill built in 1860, and the Dickinson House, the home of the Mill owner, built in 1867, which now serves as a heritage house museum. With its charming beauty and a unique used bookstore, this site is worth a visit while biking along the Rideau Canal.

Tips for Cyclists: Safety & Convenience

If you’ve decided you’re interested in biking this upcoming summer but don’t own one yourself, we at Accora Village offer rentals for residents. Along with rentals, here are some of our practical safety tips for your biking trips.

Safety Tips

The Ottawa bylaw states that all cyclists must have a well-fitted helmet to mitigate the risks of injuries. Remember road rules, including:

  • Bikes can share the road with cars but must keep to the right of the centre line.
  • Use the bell when passing someone.
  • Only pass when it’s safe to do so.
  • Bike at a suitable speed.
  • Ride slowly at night, dress brightly and use bike lights for better visibility.

Bike Maintenance Tips

Ensure bikes have the proper tire pressure, brakes are functioning, and the chain is on correctly. If your bike needs a thorough tune-up, consider taking it to a bike shop to ensure it’s safe and in good working condition.

Parking and Locking Up

Bring a reliable and sturdy bike lock; most trails, shops, or cafes will have bike racks for you to lock up your bike to keep it safe.
