How to Make the Most of Your Balcony

How to Make the Most of Your Balcony

In the summer, a balcony can be a fantastic oasis. With a magnificent view of your city, it’s a great place to read a book, have a glass of wine, and soak in the sunlight. It’s a fine luxury that anyone can take advantage of. Accora Village residents love their balcony spaces, offering vista views of Canada’s Capital, the Ottawa River, and other beautiful nearby areas from a distance. Let’s help you spruce up your own balcony with these tips and tricks.

Give it Character

To make the most of your balcony, spend some time planning what it will look like. Is it going to be a reading nook? A place to wine and dine? A small garden? Having some insight into what you want the balcony to be will help you when you start to decorate it. Your balcony is an extension of your home, so think carefully about what you want to do with it.

Chairs (and Comfy Ones!)

Your choice of seating will really depend on what you choose to do with your balcony. For example, if you’re turning it into an eating area, you’ll probably want to have a small table with some lightweight chairs (don’t forget the cushions!) for dining. With a reading nook, you’ll probably want to opt for something cozier. It’s possible to fit a small bench onto a balcony, or a cumfy chair where you can cuddle up under some blankets or bask in the sunlight. On the other hand, if you’re going to turn your balcony into a vegetable and herb garden, you may not use chairs at all, or might prefer to just have a small one in the corner where you can enjoy your plants in peace.

Fantastic Flowers

We’ve talked about having a garden on the balcony, but there are other options if you aren’t into growing your own food. No matter how you choose to design your balcony, flowers can turn it from quiet elegance into a total oasis. It’s not just that flowers are visually appealing, either; many of them also have pleasant smells which can make you feel like you’re at a spa. Lavender, anyone? They also don’t take up much space, since you can get planters that attach securely to your railing from the inside or sit anchored to the floor.

Accessorization

Why not get a rug for the floor of your balcony! It sounds counterintuitive because the space is outside, but a rug will make your balcony feel like an extension of your home rather than a separate area. When you design your space, the rug that you choose will go a long way in creating the image you want to project. Your best bet is to bring home an outdoor carpet that is weather resistant, stopping it from getting damaged.

Go Minimal

Cluttered spaces aren’t fun to navigate through. If you keep tripping over something, remove it. Our balconies are spacious and inviting with beautiful views, but having too much stuff can make any space feel smaller than it really is. Where you can, use the wall space and railings. Put tables and chairs up against the walls, there or from the railings, and organize your planters with care. If you’ve come up with a great design and not everything fits, don’t fret. Choose the most important things and forget about the rest. In many cases, less clutter can feel like a whole lot more in terms of enjoying your space to the fullest!
